Differences Between ADR and Non-ADR Transport
In the bulk liquid transport sector, you’ll often hear about “ADR transport” and “non-ADR transport.” But what does each one actually mean, and why does the difference matter? At Transportes Martín, specialists in the bulk transport of liquid chemicals since 1925, we explain it clearly.
What is ADR transport?
ADR (Accord européen relatif au transport international des marchandises Dangereuses par Route) is the European agreement governing the international carriage of dangerous goods by road. It applies to any substance that, because of its physical, chemical or toxicological properties, could pose a risk to people, property or the environment during transport.
Products in this category include:
- Flammable substances
- Corrosive substances
- Toxic substances
- Pressurised gases
- Oxidising substances or substances hazardous to the environment
ADR transport requires compliance with strict regulations. These cover every part of the operation: vehicles, tanks, packaging, documentation, staff training and emergency procedures.
What is non-ADR transport?
Non-ADR transport covers goods that are not classified as dangerous under the ADR criteria, even though they may be industrial or chemical liquids. They still need care and specialist handling. They just aren’t subject to the specific dangerous goods regulations.
Key differences
1. Vehicles and tanks
ADR transport requires vehicles approved specifically for dangerous goods, with tanks certified for the type of product (pressure, lining, discharge systems, etc.). Non-ADR transport also uses tanks specialised for each product, but this specific approval is not mandatory.2. Driver training
Drivers carrying ADR goods must hold an ADR Driver Training Certificate (CFC-ADR). This specific, mandatory training has to be renewed periodically. It isn’t a legal requirement for non-ADR transport, but at Transportes Martín we train our whole team to the same demanding standards, whatever the load.3. Documentation and marking
ADR transport requires specific documentation, such as the dangerous goods declaration and instructions in writing. It also requires visible marking on the vehicle, with orange plates and hazard labels. Non-ADR transport doesn’t need this marking, but it must still comply with general freight transport regulations.4. Safety protocols
In ADR transport, loading, unloading and incident response procedures are strictly regulated and subject to inspection. Safety is also a priority in non-ADR transport, but the procedures aren’t subject to the same specific regulation.5. Routes and restrictions
Some ADR goods face traffic restrictions in certain areas, tunnels or time slots, depending on their hazard category. Non-ADR transport generally has no such limits. Why this distinction matters
Knowing whether a product needs ADR or non-ADR transport isn’t just a regulatory question. It decides which vehicle, which driver and which protocols you need for safe, legally compliant transport. Getting the classification wrong can create serious safety risks and lead to legal penalties for the company.
Our commitment, whatever the load
At Transportes Martín we handle both ADR and non-ADR transport. We apply the same standards of rigour, training and safety to both, and they have been our hallmark for almost a century.
